Step-by-Step Umurah Guide

A comprehensive guide to prepare you spiritually and practically for your sacred journey to the House of Allah.

    1. Ihram (Intention & Purification)

The state of purity and intention. Pilgrims must bathe, wear the Ihram garments (two unstitched white cloths for men, modest clothing for women), and make the formal intention (Niyyah) to perform Umurah at the designated Miqat. The recitation of Talbiyah begins here.

    Key Actions:

    • Perform Ghusl (ritual bath)
    • Wear Ihram garments
    • Pray two Raka'at
    • Make the Niyyah (Intention)
    • Begin reciting Talbiyah: 'Labbayka Allahumma Labbayk...'

    2. Tawaf (Circling the Kaaba)

Upon arriving at Al-Masjid Al-Haram, pilgrims perform Tawaf by circumambulating the Holy Kaaba seven times counter-clockwise, starting from the Black Stone (Hajar al-Aswad).

    Key Actions:

    • Stop reciting Talbiyah upon seeing the Kaaba
    • Ensure you are in a state of Wudu
    • Start at the Black Stone (kiss, touch, or point to it)
    • Complete 7 circuits
    • Pray two Raka'at behind Maqam Ibrahim (if possible)
    • Drink Zamzam water

    3. Sa'i (Walking between Safa & Marwah)

Walking seven times between the hills of Safa and Marwah, honoring the devotion of Hajar (wife of Prophet Ibrahim) as she searched for water for her son Ismail.

    Key Actions:

    • Ascend Mount Safa and make Du'a
    • Walk towards Mount Marwah
    • Men should jog gently between the green lights
    • Ascend Mount Marwah and make Du'a
    • Complete 7 laps (ending at Marwah)

    4. Halq or Taqsir (Shaving or Trimming Hair)

The final step to complete the Umurah. Men are recommended to shave their heads completely (Halq) or trim their hair evenly (Taqsir). Women trim a small portion (fingertip length) of their hair.

    Key Actions:

    • Halq (shaving) is highly recommended for men
    • Taqsir (trimming) is acceptable for men
    • Women must only trim a small amount
    • This act lifts all Ihram restrictions
    • Your Umurah is now complete. Alhamdulillah!
